The Negotiation: I pushed: "Given the website's constant errors and the unexpected surcharge, is there any way to waive the phone booking fee (if it was applicable at the time) or offer a small points credit for the inconvenience?" She couldn't waive a fee that wasn't there yet, but did offer 2,500 Aeroplan points as a "goodwill gesture for the website experience."

  5. The Booking: I booked the Lufthansa flight for 75,000 points + $185 CAD. The flight was excellent, but the road to booking was paved with frustration and an unexpected cost bump.

  6. Value Assessment: Cash price for that one-way business class ticket was over $4,500. My 75,000 points + $185 cash yielded a value of (4500-185)/75000 = 5.75 cents per point. Even with the extra $55 and the hassle, that's phenomenal. The 2,500 goodwill points were a bonus.

This imperfect journey highlights that even when the system is against you, knowing what to expect and how to push can still yield significant results. Never assume the displayed price is the final price, and always be ready to demand compensation for a broken experience.
